final drafts finish line

Nearing the end of draft three, I'm feeling simultaneously eager to sprint to the finish and hesitant to let go. I know there will be more drafts (and more books in this particular series!). But finishing this draft is coming to the end of a year-long journey. Writing became such an outlet for me, and now I can't imagine my days without it. I always thought I wanted to write a book. Mostly because I love to read and it seems like a pretty thing to do. If you love to read, of course you should write, right?

But I never imagined that writing would fill me up in all the ways it did. Even on frustrating, painstaking days where the whole process felt fraught with failure and disaster. I've truly enjoyed every minute (phew!). And, the best part? I've learned so much and gotten so much better at the whole writing process.

When my first draft was done, I was so happy...until I read it. Draft two was filled with so many changes, and draft three has been all for the final pieces of mystery and intrigue sliding into place. When this is done (and maybe a couple more quick drafts too), I'll have to let go and get feedback. On this story and characters and world I created. And, that is terrifying. Is Luna ready for that?!

So, instead of writing about that, I'll share the biggest differences I've noticed in my draft process this far into draft three.

  1. Since I always intended for this to be a four book series, by draft three, I've finally been able to setup those future books. It's wild to be planning like that.

  2. Adding personality for characters has gotten so much easier this draft, since we're basically best buds at this point anyway. Even when I don't like them, I know them so well now. Giving them fun dialogue and quirks is much more authentic now.

  3. Speaking of characters, this book has been all from Luna's perspective. But I'm starting to see it from a few new perspectives, and thinking that may be explored next. Will Riley, Luna's yoga teacher/Guide get his turn? Or fiery Britt? I'm ready to go there.

Now, off to sprint through the remaining parts of draft three and then emotionally prepare for the final farewell where this book will be read (and judged) by others.
