luna, beatrix bobbit & co
In the not so distant past, the world was ENRAPTURED with quizzes that would proclaim your Hogwarts House, if you were a Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte or Miranda, which Friends character you'd be. Okay, perhaps this was a smallish group, but it happened (like zipping to Blockbuster to trade one season of 24 for the next one).
While the online craze may have died down a bit (though, TBD because my Patronus just shifted from a dolphin to a hare), this is something I still do when reading or watching characters. Would I be friends with Frodo? Or Ted Lasso (EMPHATICALLY YES)? Would I have mistrusted Snape, too? Would I let Cher give me a makeover (also EMPHATICALLY YES, I've been waiting)?
Thinking about this a lot lately after creating characters of my own. Luna, my yogi Protectress just trying to juggle being sixteen with the weight of new powers and multiple worlds. And, Beatrix Bobbit, my wannabe maybe witch who knows who she is and isn't afraid to wear heavy black velvet clothing in the summer. Of course, when you create one character, you naturally create others for them to interact with. Friends and family and a Council and Frigi and Flying Instructors...and so on.
And, at some point (after lots of writing!), you have whole little worlds of characters. As the writer of these characters, it's kinda impossible not to wonder which one you are. Are you a Luna? Or a Britt? A Beatrix? Or a Mrs. Bobbit? I honestly don't know what the answer is, the ways in which you write yourself subconsciously into characters could be obvious or subtle. You might show up in small fragments of multiple characters, only in one or not at all. Who's to say.
I don't think it matters one way or another, as long as you're creating interesting characters, other people will connect with them. And, maybe wonder if they're a Luna or Britt or Darya or Sera, too.
Now, a text exchange from those four Protectresses. Which one are you?!
Luna: hiiii, sorry i totally passed out...
Britt: jeeeez, we were so worried
Darya OR Sera: so worried. this is Sera btw
Luna: soooo sorry, i was beyond exhausted!! what’d i miss????
Britt: not much...we were just rehashing some of the insanely dangerous, harrowing things that happened to us
Darya: Deron didn’t tell me anything useful. he was super weird tho, like evading my questions about where the other three girls were…….
Sera: same here! Gale was all like i’m so proud of you blah blah blah but no we’re not talking about the other girls, the freaking monsters that tried to attack us or anything else that actually MATTERS
Britt: ughhhhh wtf, Aidan wouldn’t tell me anything either. i may have lost it a little on him…
Luna: ohhhhh nooo. what’d you do?????
Britt: i didn’t do anything…i just told him if he’s into watching little girls run around then he should consider lurking at a playground instead of standing by while we literally fight for our lives
Darya: omg
Sera: Britt……..
Luna: what did he say?????
Britt: he seemed pretty pissy, but that he’d let it slide because i’d “been through a lot.” no, shit. as if he didn’t have any control over that?!
Darya: i get it, i’m angry too! they knew what we were going through, and they didn’t do anything to help us
Luna: it’s super weird and creepy that they were watching too...when riley said that i lost it. it makes me wonder why they were watching. i mean, if not to help us, then why? to judge us? it doesn’t make sense!
Sera: yassss! what was the point then?
Britt: we better find out more tomorrow
Luna yawned. Even though talking to the others was riling her up with outrage, the Solatium hung heavy in her veins, beckoning slumber.
Luna: alright i’m getting sleepy again, chat more tomorrow?
Darya: yeah we need sleep, night
Britt: lameeeee...but sweet dreams
Sera: goooood night
