luna's recent reads
Just a quick check-in to share what I've been reading lately in the midst of lots of writing. I usually read mostly fantasy and science fiction, and have completely converted to reading only those (minus my monthly book club, Talking to Strangers this month!) partly out of immersion to be a better fantasy writer, and partly because that's all I'm really wanting to read lately (*the mildest book spoilers below the delightful quote).
Along with my reading immersion, I've been getting into anime at LONG LAST. It's creative and beautiful and imaginative and I can't believe it's taken me this long but I'm here now. Princess Mononoke was the beginning of this journey after reading a particularly lovely review from the beloved and oh so missed Roger Ebert.
I go to the movies for many reasons. Here is one of them. I want to see wondrous sights not available in the real world, in stories where myth and dreams are set free to play. Animation opens that possibility, because it is freed from gravity and the chains of the possible. Realistic films show the physical world; animation shows its essence. - Roger Ebert
And, now I've got a list of anime to watch that's not nearly as long as my list of books...but it's getting there.
Here's what I've recently read, am reading and am really really excited to read soon:
Recently finished SJM's A Court of Silver Flames: I way HESITANT to read a book with Nesta as the protagonist. I mean, NESTA?! How could we cheer for her?! But, it was SJM, so obviously I was going to read it. And, unsurprisingly, I loved it. Nesta can be frustrating and maddening and she'll never be my favorite character. But actually found myself sympathizing with her and rooting for her progress! Wow! The Valkyrie WARRIOR training friendship between Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie was by far my favorite part.
Also recently finished: Coraline (a re-read, loved!) and a Darker Shade of Magic. After reading the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue for book club, I've been diving into all of V.E. Schwab's goodness. This book was just so so so good. Different Londons?! A wannabe pirate?! Can't wait for more.
Currently reading: A Discovery of Witches and Interview with the Vampire (revisiting and loving every moment).
Up next: These Hollow Vows, The Eye of the World and Realm Breaker !!!!
Got any great books to share? I'd love to hear what you're reading, too.
