Moon Magic, Mermaids and Books

The Moon, Mermaids and Books are three of my favorite things. And my first two books feature both the Moon personified as a character, and mermaid like creatures called merlagoons whose tails transfrom to legs during sunlight hours (thus spelling trouble when Night Dust makes night eternal in Nyxville.)

As I'm working on a 2nd draft for the merlagoon book and fixing a few things in the Moon centric one, I've been wanting to read books I know and love instead of reading new books.

First drafts feel like give me all the new books, all the inspiration, maybe trying to find comps where my little books could possibly share shelves?

But 2nd drafts...and 3rd, 4th, etc, feel like the time to read writing you love and admire, revisit characters with great arcs and dialogue. Basically in the hopes that your book can be as good as the book you love.

I don't know if this is a thing other writers do, or if the this is another little unique quirk of my own individual writing process, but I'm curious either way. Would love to know what works for you?

And, since I know you're obvioulsy DYING for that list of books I'm re-reading, here it goes:

  1. THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE - give me Addie and her ideas forever

  2. SORCERY OF THORNS - I love every character, but Silas has my whole heart

  3. ELLA ENCHANTED - my absolute favorite book as a child, holds up perfectly, and Ella's curse is excellent research for NIGHT SOIREE'S compulsion magic

  4. THE SELECTION SERIES - It's been a long time since I read this, but the matchmaking and Balls felt perfect for inspiration for NIGHT SOIREE
