the reality of stories

Why do you read? Seriously, think about it. I'll wait. So will Luna, she's notoriously good at waiting after waiting nearly sixteen years for answers about who she really is...

Got it? Good. Not that you really need an answer as to why you love to read, but it's something I've been thinking about a lot. And it's really pretty simple.

I love to read to get lost in a great story. To escape and imagine something else is possible, especially things like magic that seem impossible. When magic and elves and fairies and witches exist in stories, they become real, even if it's only in your mind.

“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” - Albus Dumbledore

What makes writing so amazing, is that you -- THE WRITER -- hold that power to dream up the impossible and write it into existence. What does reality matter when the words you're writing are real?

Luna was only ever an idea in my head until the words became pages and chapters. The Protectresses were nothing more than a vague word until they got names and back stories and a mysterious history. Just some thoughts on this holiday Monday whilst I avoid working on editing down Luna's synopsis for a Query letter.

So far, not happy with it yet. WHY IS THIS SO HARD. But, hopeful that with lots and lots of edits and re-writes, it'll get where Luna wants it to be.

As long as Luna can remember, she’s been sneaking out to wander the Silvis that surrounds Star’s End. Even though entering the Silvis is forbidden. Especially at night. Luna’s always felt a pull towards it, and lately the pull is getting stronger.

Now that she’s sixteen she wants answers for all her strange and inexplicable behaviors over the years. How, occasionally, a flick of her wrist shifts shadow and moonlight. Or those times her fingers emitted bright sparks. It’s getting worse, and her parents won’t talk about it.

It isn’t until her yoga teacher asks her to stay after class one evening, that Luna discovers what she’s been training for her whole life. She’s been gifted powers that have at last settled. Now, it’s time to use them.

The powers, of course, come with a catch: to protect Star’s End from the dangers trapped in the Silvis. And, there are six others like her who will bear the name Protectress.
